Solstice Morning 2016

I woke up early today on this winter solstice to join some friends for sunrise at the Foothills Parkway in the Smokies. It is one of my favorite places to photograph: there is almost always some interesting light there!

As you probably know, the winter solstice is the first day of winter and the shortest period of daylight, at least for those of us in the northern hemisphere. From a photographer’s perspective, the winter solstice is the day you can sleep in the latest and still catch a sunrise. 😉 From a more practical standpoint, the winter solstice also marks the time in the year when the daylight begins to get longer. So, it may not seem like it based on temperatures, but the solstice is a new beginning in our annual cycle of the seasons. How is that for positive thinking?

To celebrate, here is an image I created this morning. I have entitled it “Solstice Morning 2016” to commemorate the beginning of a new season and a new light.
I hope you enjoy it!
